Unused throughput refers to the portion of a system’s capacity that remains idle or underutilized. In simpler terms, it’s the difference between the maximum potential performance and the actual performance, difference between work and idle:

  • Work refers to any activity that involves effort or exertion to achieve a specific goal. It’s productive, purposeful, and contributes to a desired outcome
  • Idle, on the other hand, implies a state of inactivity or rest. It’s a period when no productive work is being done
