The classical Greek language has quite an interesting take on beauty. The Greeks had a noun, κάλλος, kallos, which meant beauty, and an adjective for beautiful, καλός, kalos. Their word for beautiful in Koine Greek was ὡραῖος, hōraios, which was related to the word ὥρα, hōra, meaning hour. This ties in with the idea that beauty was associated with being of one’s hour, so a ripe fruit was considered beautiful, whereas a young woman trying to seem older or an older woman trying to appear younger would not be considered beautiful. Interestingly enough, in Attic Greek, hōraios had various meanings, including youthful and ripe old age
